Immersion with chris

This week for immersion with Chris, we were looking at designing a playground. In our first session, we visited Catalina playground again to notice all the things we would like to design in our school. But we also had to play on the playground to see what we liked and disliked.

In our second session, we were looking at what makes a good survey. We did this by discussing how to do a survey and creating one. In order to do this, we had to ask two questions about what we would like in a playground, but we had to ask a variety of people. My questions were, where would you like a playground? And what equipment would you like on it? I also choose to ask some LC4 kids and some LC7 kids for my survey. The challenging part of this session was collecting all of the data and putting it into a PI graph in our books.

For our last session, we discussed what sorts of things make a playground creative. Next, we also had to design a dream playground and I collaborated with my friend Amy. Our playground had an automated flying fox, spinny mickey mouse chairs, a swing into a foam pit, an inbuilt pool and monkey bars with trampolines underneath. Designing my playground was very fun, but once we did that, we had to use the HARK feedback technique to give others some specific, helpful and kind feedback.

I really enjoyed this immersion. It was really fun and I would have considered it as a project option if I had time. Some of my highlights were designing our dream playgrounds and surveying different people.

Christella's feedback
1. add a capital letter in the second papragraph

Math week 10

This week for math with Nicole and Helen, we are looking at man-made landmarks around the world. Our task this week is to pick a landmark and research all about it. I am working on doing the pyramids of Giza, collaborating with my friend Christella. Some of our slides are about measurement and geometry which is level 5, but we are also working on probability and estimation which is level 4. My favourite slide to complete is the measurement slide because I think it is quite easy. but a challenging slide is the probability slide where we have to think about if building your landmark is likely enough in New Zealand.

Harry potter and the chamber of secrets

Title: Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets.
Author: J.K Rowling

Recently, this week I have been reading Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets by J.K Rowling. This thrilling book is about Harry Potter going to Hogwarts school of witchcraft and wizardry for his second-year and is told to not return to Hogwarts a house Elf, Dobby saying there is a plot against him. But harry ignores the advice and finds himself in a lot of trouble with Tom Riddle(Voldemort). Everyone in Hogwarts is getting just as nervous as Harry due to all the attacks on the students of Hogwarts and being left frozen and petrified. But drastic matters take drastic actions so Harry decides to go with his friend Ron and Professor Lockhart (one of the teachers at Hogwarts) to the chamber of secrets and fight off Voldermort for the third time.

This book has 251 pages, but its all worth it with the amount of great vocabulary and amazing sentence starters J.K Rowling has chosen to use. My favourite part would have to be when Harry finally gets revenge on Dudely, his Aunt and Uncle with a snake as Harry can speak parseltongue. A very tense and dramatic part of this book is when Harry and Ron discover that Hermonie, their best friend has just been a victim of the mysterious attacks and left petrified. This book has had me hooked in so much I can't take my eyes off the pages. I would definitely recommend the Harry Potter series for those who like mystery, adventure and magic.

Immersion with Jess and Sarah

For immersion with Jess and Sarah, we were doing a performance. In our first session, we played a game called 'What are you doing', which we had to do in a circle and act out what our peers told us to do. We also talked about facial expressions and body language.

For our second session, we were with Sarah and did some freeze frames requiring different things in dance. Freeze frames are creating a certain image then freezing in it. Then we also did the same thing but with poems. Throughout the session we talked about how dance has a purpose and why we do it. We did this by watching a lot of inspirational videos about how dancing can help you express you, and many other things. In our second session, we also had to create a play about three words which were peach, excited and winter. In my group were Grace, Rhiannon, and Anjani. Our script was about the news talking about spring finally coming and how excited peach farmers are to have winter over.

And for our last session, we were playing some games about drama and discussing how to improvise. One of them was called 'Everyone who'. In this game, someone would be in the middle and call 'Everyone Who' and add something to it, for example, 'Everyone Who' eats apples, then whoever does that, they would run to get another seat while the middle person would try to steal someone else's seat. Jess and Sarah also told us how to play the laughing game it was very fun.

In this Immersion group, I enjoyed playing 'Everyone Who'. Some of the challenges I faced was working in a large group and doing the freeze frame.

Mackenzie's feedback:
1. In the first sentence, it says performance acting. I think you should change that as it doesn't really make sense
2. You shouldn't start a sentence with and.

Christella's feedback
1. maybe change for to in.

Math week 9

This week for math with Nicole and Helen, we were looking at the Pythagoras theorem (a² + b ² = c²). We had to do a slide about Pythagoras, his theorems and who he was. Pythagoras invented the musical scale and the Pythagoras theorem. My highlights of math this week was learning a new technique of math because I love making the most of math. The slide that challenged me the most was the last slide which we had to have the triangle and turn it into a right angle triangle then find out the hight. My favourite slide was when we had to square the right angle triangle lags to find out the value of C.

Bruce mason theatere

On Tuesday term 3 weeks 8, LC2, LC4 and LC7 went on a trip to Bruce Mason theatre to learn about performance, sound and acting for our creativity immersion group. First LC7 was split into 2 groups. Then, we learnt about performing which included, stage managing, lighting and acting. In this first rotation I was acting as I child and it was great fun.

Later on, once we had morning tea, we were doing some activities related to sound and one of them was an example of all the sounds you can't actually hear in reality but was brought in for performing, this is called realism. After that, we moved onto listening to sounds and improvising with the phone audio track. Then it became lunch.

After lunch, there was a performance by some people at touch campus which is a dance group with disabled people and some not. Then touch campus showed us the Ninebot which is like a hoverboard but you can also command it using Bluetooth. We also did some movement similar to the Ninebot with following the leader. My favourite part of the trip was doing a performance in front of the other LC7 group.

Math week 8

In week 8 term 3 my math group with Nicole, The Humans we were looking at the circumference of a circle. some of the tasks we did were around finding the area of circles using the radius and diameter. The formula for calculating the circumference of a circle is Pi rx2 and the formula for finding the are of a circle is pi r2. The most challenging slide was the one where we had to prove why the perimeter of the circle is smaller than any other shape. My favourite slide was finding the area of the circle using the diameter.

Immersion with Max

For our first session with Max, we looked at creativity and what is it. We also looked at Tiffany Singh and all her cool artwork and sculptures she chose. This project is to create a moral artwork in front of the school cafeteria using the help of Tiffany Singh. Some of the silhouettes we were looking at were related to our Hobsonville point community.
But for our second session, I didn't get to go because we had to do a writing assessment.
In our third session, we were looking at how silhouettes can resemble all sorts of stuff for example city's which can be recognizable easily. We did a Kahoot quiz about city's and telling what city it is only using a silhouette. We also had to look at some of Tiffany Singh's artwork and tell the story behind them, later on, we were talking about the finer detail Apple put into their iPod campaign for their silhouettes of a famous rockstar band. I liked this immersion because of all the cool silhouettes we had and made. some of the challenges I had was coming up with an idea for silhouettes.

Immersion with Liv

For our three sessions with Liv, we were looking at all the signage around the high school because we are going to be designing some art around the school about our school values. In our second sessi0on with Liv we looked at the photos we took around the high school and put sticky notes on the photos showing all the principal values. We also got to draw something related to one of our school values and my team chose to do a computer with a scrabble game saying Personalised Learning. In the last session with Liv we looked at photoshop but then plans changed so we took photos on the iPad of free space to put art and jazz up the sign's that Emma gave to us. Mine was about the pedestrians crossing in hail while going to school under any circumstances. some of the highlights I had was when we got to do a drawing of the school crossing sign, but some of the challenges I faced was making the computers saying personalized learning.

Harry potter and the philosopher's stone

In week 8 I'm reading the first Harry Potter book in the series by J.K Rowling. This amazing book is about a young boy named Harry Potter how has had a major incident when he was young by the terrible Voldemort. Voldemort tried to kill Harry when he was 1 year old after killing his parents, so the only person left to go to was his mother Lilly's Muggle sister's family. When Harry had lived at their Muggle family's house, he was treated very badly, he got no presents for his birthday, he had to cook breakfast all on his own and Dudley had always bullied Harry along with uncle Vernon and aunt Petuina. Later on, Harry gets a letter from Albus Dumbledor inviting him to come to Hogwarts school of wizardry and witchcraft. Then the real journey begins. This book is really interesting for me because of all the unique and interesting vocabulary J.K Rowling has chosen to use in this fantastic book.

Playground immersion

This week for immersion, We are learning about playgrounds and considering building a senior playground. In each immersion, we have 3 sessions then rotate to another group. This immersion is run by Jono. For our first session we had a look at the coconut park and took notes about all the stuff we could have, some of the equipment I chose was a flying fox, monkey bars, and spider swing. On our second session we had to create a 3-D model of an object in a playground, then Jono told us we might be able to use LC4's 3-D printer to print out our objects we chose to design.
Immersion is to help us decide on a project. Usually, we first do immersion then the teachers have project options we can choose from, but this term we are having project options and being immersed through them. My favourite part about this immersion is when we got to design a 3-D model of our equipment. I will definitely consider this as one of my project options.

The lost girl book review

This week, I have been reading The lost girl by R.L Stine. This book is about a boy called Michael who uses his dads snow mobile with his friends and accidentally kills a teenager, Angel about his size then Angel's soul comes and attempts killing each and every one of his friends in some painful way. This thrilling book shows the perspective of Michael with the fear of being killed anytime. My favourite part about this thrilling book is when Michael finally decides to tell the police about Angel the psycho.

Silverdale adventure park

On Friday week 6 LC7 went to Silverdale adventure park for a trip learning about energy and physics. When we arrived we had a briefing about all the rides and where they are. The thrilling rides that I could go on were the luge which you got to ride in a kart and drive it down the hill and break at every corner, the doughnut where you sat in this seat and slid down a hill, the spaceship which is a 5-D film and the 7-D virtual reality film. The rest of the rides you had to be between 40 to 8o kgs(I couldn't go on them). The zipline was when you had to lie down on a bunch of straps and go down hill in the air. The other one I couldn't go on was the bungy jump, for the bungy jump you were harnessed and then you were flung in the air as high as anything. My favourite ride was the virtual reality film (we watched one about horror and it was really spooky).

If I was invisible for a day

In this amazing writing piece, I completed :

  • Independently revise and rework writing.
  • proofread to check for spelling and grammar
  • crossing out unnecessary parts
  • use a dictionary/thesaurus
  • making sure it makes sense
  • seek and give feedback and feedforward on own and others writing
  • craft and recraft writing in response to feedback

If I was invisible for a day  30/8/17

If I was invisible for a day I would prank everyone by wrapping a piece of cloth on my head and say in a horrific bold voice "booo" I would also go over to Zarlia's house and get revenge for her toilet papering my house.

To get revenge for her nasty crime I'm going to blow an air horn into her ear while she's sleeping. Then as soon as she would wake up she would go "aaaaahh" but then I would pop a rotten apple into her mouth so I wouldn't go deaf!

Next, I would probably go to the biggest pizza place in town, The mighty Slice. I would also secretly eat all the mouth watering pizza.  The olives topped on my pizza were disturbingly staring at me waiting to be eaten.

My journey was as exciting as a child getting candy!

Writing goal week 6

This week for writing I am trying to prove 7 goals. To do this I have to write a piece of writing, including all my goals and get it signed off by my teacher Nicole. My writing piece is about if I could be invisible for a day. This is a level four activity. I'm really excited for writing because all of my goals are so fun to complete. For my standard this week I am aiming at level 4 because I think I need to improve a bit more.on my vocabulary and editing.

Fish in a tree book review

This week I have been reading the book fish in a tree by Lynda Mullaly Hunt. This book is filled with excitement and emotions, the book is about a girl called Ally who just joined a school and is finding it hard to make friends. I like this book because they put a lot of interest about Ally, so it really makes you hooked in. I think the setting of this book is important because as Ally is a middle school student. the key features in this book were all the great vocabulary terms that the author used. I haven't finished the book yet but I am really hooked in I have been reading it for 4 days. My favourite part so far has to be when ally finally has a teacher that's nice

Maths Week 5

This week for math we had to try and finish most of our knowledge goals. But if you've finished like me you have to use a website called Nrich with has tons of math projects and problems for you to solve. So far I have used Nrich to do some algebra problems and there is this really tricky problem where you verse the computer and try and make a square before the computer does.

Bread making with LC3

On Tuesday Amy and I were requested to help LC3, The year zeros and ones with their bread making for their project. The little kids were really excited about it. It took some handling to do but they were really good and listened. The first step to making bread is to mix the hot water and yeast until the yeast has dissolved. The next step is then to carefully add the milk, sugar, salt, and flour into the same bowl. Finally, you have to slowly mix it together to create a doughy texture. Now you let it aside for an hour to rise then you bake it in the oven. But LC3  made shapes before we baked it.

Book review

The past few days I have been reading "The ghost next door" by R.l Stine. this book took me 5 days to read. I thought this book was really spooky because Hannah, one of the main characters accused Danny of being a ghost, but the night before that she had a dream that there was a fire. Then Hannah realized she was the ghost.

Project process

On Monday term 3 week 5 is when we are going to present our projects. The process of my project throughout the whole thing is to first choose a topic then to start completing tasks. Each task is worth either 1, 2 or 3 stars. Some of the challenges in this project were to finish all the tasks in time but now I know that I have until week 6 I was reassured.  Some of the highlights I had during my project was that most of the tasks I completed were really fun. So far I have earned 15 stars meaning I am 75 percent through.

Writing goal

This week my writing goal is to choose a topic that might interest the reader. I am practicing this by writing out 1 paragraph about an interesting, creative writing topic every week, my topic this week is the perspective of a pinata and it is very funny. this was really fun to do. I got this inspiration from a google writing prompt.

Fear street book review

Author: R.l Stine

Title: Fear street

When started: 31 of July

When finished: 1 of August

I enjoyed this book because it had a lot of tense drama and really hooked me in. The book was about a new girl moving into fear street and learning about the secret tradition of playing hide and seek to finalize how will be possessed by the ghost Pete.

LC7 trust licenses

This term we started off with a fresh start. The teachers took away our trust license so that everyone can start again. I am a full trust license so that means the teachers can trust me to go anywhere in the school. A no mans land person has to ask to be in the breakout space, but can use any device. A supported have to plan and stay in an allocated space and only get to use a chromebook unless negotiated with an L.A.

In term 2 we made 3-d houses using Sketchup for maths with Amy as a project. Here is a video about my house. The perimeter of my house is 299.04 m, and the perimeter of my whole property is 784.592m

How devices can be used for learning

How devices can be used for learning

Devices have been Introduced to children to help them learn in all ways possible. This helps them focus more on their learning and can be used to build up responsibility, with several other reasons.

Devices get your child ready for the future. These days good jobs require good technology skills.Teachers introduce devices to your children at a young age to get them ready for high school. This could also help them get a good job when they're older, for example children could get a great job with coding. With devices children have a great future in their hands and to help them do that they have access devices anywhere anytime.

Children can use devices anywhere anytime. A child can use a device at home to do learning if they are sick instead of just lying around doing nothing. The teacher could give them some tasks to do online and you could complete them. If devices can be used every where then children can use them for anything.

Kids can use devices for all learning reasons. For example they can use it for reading, writing, math, science and coding. This is because learning on devices can make it easier and more educational for all subjects. With devices children can use learning resources easily like maths buddy and google drive.

Devices can be used for learning because they get them ready for the future and all the latest softwares around the world and children can use them anywhere anytime and  they can use them for everything.

Term 3 projects

In term 3 we are starting projects to do with science. The 3 project options are learning it by asking a question and using the research process, prove it by constructing an item for a science fair or earning a science badge by completing tasks to earn 20 stars and the last option is to do a teach it which could look like creating a science YouTube channel or doing lessons for the other learning commons. I chose to do a project about earning an astronomy science badge.

Week 9 Why we need plants to live

Why we need plants to live?

Plants have so many benefits and some examples are that it purifies the air, it provides us with food and many other reasons.

Plants give us oxygen. This is because of the photosynthesis process which is carbon dioxide and water, then they take the energy from the sunlight and produce it into oxygen and food which we can’t live without. Did you know 90% of all the water in the plants roots is eventually released back into the atmosphere to purify the air which is also part of photosynthesis?

If we had no plants, then there would be no food. Every food there is in the world has something from plants. Therefore plants give us food so we can’t live without them. Did you know some plants even have medicinal properties?

Plants have so many medicinal properties. For example, lavender is known to help you stay calm and relaxed. It also helps release pain and when you apply to cuts and bruises it is a great antiseptic.

In conclusion, we need plants to live because they give us oxygen, food and provide plants that have medicinal properties.

Term 2 Week 10 Immersion

This week with Felicity in immersion we are looking at the food chain. Me and Keira have been looking at germination, In order to do that we were growing our own grass. I named mine Buddy and Keira named hers Germy. We have also done an experiment about a bacteria party which is to swab and test how much bacteria is on the item.
This is our plants to germinate.

Ravenclaw with Felicity

In term 2 week 9 we looked at unpacking sentences  and what it means. Whenever someone starts unpacking a sentence Felicity told us you always have to always begin with "I think that means". For example It is a commonly held opinion that the lion is the king of the beasts. I think that means a lot of people think that the lion is the biggest and the grandest of all animals.

Immersion with Felicity

Today for immersion we looked at plants and the process of photosynthesis. Photo in Greek means light and synthesis means putting it together. Felicity gave us some study ladder tasks about plants giving us energy. And how if one animal from the food chain suddenly disappeared it would affect the whole food chain. We also did a fun activity about sorting a pile of photo's into living and non-living. But there was an argument about if sea anemone are a animal or a plant, then we asked felicity and she told us they were half plant half animal.

Writing explanation

In week 8 term 2 for raven claw with felicity we did writing explanations. My explanation was about why we need plants to live. we started off with a P.E.E.L plan which stands for point, example, explain and link. one of my key reasons for my explanation was that they give us oxygen through the photo synthesis process.

Making a roller coaster

For immersion we were looking at the kinetic and potential energy in roller coasters. Amy gave us a link to make our own roller coaster. When I first started this I thought it was going to be easy but as I started both of my  rating stayed down, but eventually I got my safety rating up but my fun ratings stayed down. After some time all my ratings went up.

term 1 maths

In term 1 we looked at fractions, ratios and percenteges in hogwarts with felicity. In this workshop i learnt how to add and subtract fractions, square root numbers, prime numbers, and many other things. some of the challenges were coping with all the follow ups but that got solved evantally. some of the things I didn't like was nothing, I loved everything!! During the process of learning I also completed a lot of knoledge goals like

how to make a mango smothie

How to make a mango smoothie

The ostrich from pudding lane

Title:The ostrich from pudding lane
Author: Jeremy Strong

The problem the main character had been that he was an ostrich and several farmers wanted to kill him and eat him for dinner. This made me think about why would you want to eat an ostrich for dinner anyway they're so cool, I really liked this book because it had tons of humor and was really interesting because there was a giant ostrich randomly just walked into the school and surprisingly he wasn’t dangerous.

Felicity also gave me some feedback on always giving a reason why you say something, for example, I think this is interesting because of enormous animal on loose.

Term 1 literacy

In term 1 at rapping readers with Nicole we learnt how to write persuasive texts and all agreed that we should do one about why schools should be bully free. Along with that we were also reading the book wonder by Raquel J. Palacio  and writing a reading log about it. At the end of the term we had to write a persuasive writing text on our own for our writing assesment I chose to do it about why children should get phones and I will be sharing that soon. In my writing group I enjoyed everything

candle experiment

When we did an experiment about candle our follow up was to find out why black stuff appeared on the plate if you put the candle under it, here is my explanation.

The black stuff that turns up on the plate is actually called soot from the unfinished burning of the fuel, this can be caused by several factors. Two of those factors are the balance between the wax and the wick in the candle leading to disturbing the flame. The fuel to the candle flame is the liquid wax which is being drawn up through the wick. When too much fuel is presented to the flame it is not all burned.  The excess fuel is put off in the form of soot.

Science behind apple caiviar

The science behind behind the technique

The process of sphereifaction starts with dissolving sodium alganate and calcium lactate in two liquids (one in apple juice, the other in the water). Once the two are well mixed in their liquids, let them settle for a period of time to allow any trapped gases to release (put the apple flavored one in the fridge to settle). Next put the flavored liquid into a syringe and carefully squeeze drops of it into the water based liquid

chemical reaction experiment

Today we did an expirement with chemical reaction, the way elephant toothpaste works is that the hydrogen preoxide and yeast activate the dish washing soap which leads to the reaction of it exploding. I think this is a chemical reaction because if you make it once the reaction has been made its hard to reverse it.

Project reflection

My fitness project reflection

Radha, Amy, Zarlia, Mackenzie

In my project we have been working on how to keep LC3 students fit and healthy, we will accomplish this by running an amazing race for some LC3 students

My tasks have been to solve the maths questions for example work out how many km we are running and work out the weather etc. Apart from that we have all been been working together.

First we had a project map to plan and discuss what things should go in it. Then we started asinging tasks for each of us.

In the amazing race we had to create challenges and clues for the team .We all discussed that the amazing race should be 6 KM and everybody agreed.

In this project I learned about how to organise an amazing race. At the start my group had a few arguments but then they got solved and we collaborated quite well.

Throughout the project there were some difficulties but those all got solved.

Now I have felt very different about fitness and now know how important it is.

A lot of the feedback we got wasn’t very specific for example, most people were just writing things like great job, I like your idea etc, and I didn’t like that.

On week 8 term 2 was the day that we were supposed to do the amazing race on, but because we didn't get organised enough.
